U14’s Win West Region championship, U10’s Beara Final Postponed, Minor’s narrowly miss out in Semi-Final

Castletownbere Under 14’s played Beal Atha na Ghaorthaigh on Sunday last in Glengarriff in The West Region Championship D Final in very challenging, windy conditions. Both teams were well up for it, Referee Tom Barry blew the whistle and the battle began. The ‘Town lads  notched up scores from two points from frees, ably sent over by Daniel Hanley. Beal Atha na Ghaorthaigh answered with two points from  frees also. Castletown’s backs, Cormac Harrington, Shane Power, Jonathan Harrington-Rosales, Donagh Murphy and Fintan Fenner began to apply the pressure which remained persistant throughout the game fending off the attack, with Dylan Gonnelly, Tomás Murphy and Adam Walsh working tirelessly and Daniel Hanley sent another over from a free followed by a lovely point from Lee Kelly. Their competitors hit back with a point but then suddenly the ball hit the back of the net,  with a well placed goal from Ewan O’Sullivan. Beal Atha na Ghaorthaigh were not to be outdone and they too hit the back of the ‘Town net and they sent another point over the bar. But Castletown answered again with a fine goal from Lee Kelly. Another point from Ewan and two points from frees by Daniel followed and the first half finished on the score of 1/6 to 2/7. The second half saw the ‘Town lads come into their own with great play and teamwork throughout  and they began to pull away. Beal Atha na Ghaorthaigh never gave up and as ‘Town were adding on the points, Beal Atha were in for a goal but a brilliant save by goalie Killian Murphy , rock steady throughout ,denied them the goal as it was put over the bar. Castletown were then awarded a penalty which was put away by Daniel and substitutions John O’Donoghue, John Adam Byrne and Jack Hanley entered the fray. The final whisle blew and the match ended on the score of 2/9 to 6/11. Referee Tom Barry praised both teams and presented the very worthy captain Donagh Murphy with the Cup. Castletownbere Minors played Naomh Abán in the West Region Championship C Semi Final in Glengarriff also recently  in very wet conditions and despite a great effort and fantastic comeback were beaten by a point on the final score of 2/10 to 2/11.
