Castletownbere Under 14’s played Goleen in Goleen in The West Region League D Final in very windy conditions. The ‘Town lads were focused from the whistle and were on the attack within minutes. They were denied two goals by the Goleen goalie but were determined and on the third attempt, a perfectly placed shot by Lee Kelly found the back of the Goleen net. A lovely combo by Captain Daniel Hanley, Dylan Gonelly, Killian Murphy, Lee Murphy and onto Tomás Murphy then who ably floated their first point over. Shane Power, Cormac Harrington, Jonathan Harrington-Rosales and Fintan Fenner were solid in their defence throughout the match, keeping the pressure on Goleen and when the ball broke again, Ewan O’Sullivan grabbed his chance resulting in a fine goal. Donagh Murphy, Castletownbere’s goalie, then made a great save on what looked like a certain goal and Killian Murphy sent ‘Town’s second point over the bar. Goleen hit back with a lovely point but Lee Kelly retaliated with an equally impressive point. But Goleen seized their chance and scored a goal followed by a great point and the first half finished on the score of 2/3 to 1/2 in ‘Town’s favour. The second half saw Adam Walsh replace an injured Ewan O’Sullivan, performing well and Killian Murphy took up the goalie gauntlet with Donagh Murphy moving outfield.A lovely lay off from Donagh Murphy to Jonathan resulted in a classy point by Tomás then Lee and Donagh combined very well to feed the ball to Fintan who sent another over. Tomás put yet another great point over and again, Jonathan gave a great ball into Daniel and he scored an impressive point. Ewan then came back on and took a shot on a goal that rebounded but Lee was there to finish it, scoring ‘Town’s third goal. Ewan then scored a super point but then suddenly Goleen were on the attack scoring a great goal followed by a point. Cormac Harrington then scored ‘Town’s tenth point, Castletown’s substitutions John O’Donoghue, John Adam Byrne and Jack Hanley were introduced, and when the final whistle blew,it was the determination and teamwork of this well rounded Castletownbere team that won out in the end on the final score of 3/10 – 2/3.
